How do you prepare kukui nuts to make a lei
Can someone tell me how, or give advice, on how to prepare kukui nuts to
make into leis? l know they need to be polished and drilled. But l would
appreciate some advice on how to do this.
I just met someone that makes them & asked the same question-
they used 4 different size tumblers starting with very course & finishing
with a fine grid tumber (so some $ invested) then they drill the hole
(normal drill) take crochet hook to get the nut out & then they left on a
pan & place outdoors for the ants to finish the clean up job on the
nut-they also use bleach to sometimes clean the nut- green nuts produce
white nuts when complete & the black nuts come from the old nuts dropped on the ground- I learned alot from this crafter while in Kauai recently- hope it helps-they said it takes about 1-2-1/2 months to complete the process so if this is not for a business may not be worth all this-
